Plan To Planted: Colman Project

Everyone loves a before and after of a landscape project, the instant gratification of seeing a disheveled, outdated space becoming an oasis in just one swipe of your finger is not only visually appealing but also gives you that sweet hit of dopamine. But the team at Big Rock Landscaping knows there’s so much between the before and the after, and we pride ourselves on following a seamless landscape planning process that gives those stunning “after” results every time. Those after pictures are evidence of months of planning and decades of expertise, and the Colman project is a prime example of how we implement the best practices in landscape design to give you an “after” yard.

Our Landscaping Project Process

On a project like the Colman landscape, we had to use our detailed process because there were so many steps between the before and after. Many times we are starting with a yard that has had some basic landscaping done, but this yard was definitely more unfinished and needed a step-by-step process to make sure we didn’t miss anything. When we look at a yard like this, we need to consider everything from the aesthetic of the final product, but also the less exciting components of a functional landscape like sprinkling systems, lighting, hardscape foundations, gas lines, etc. There are so many pieces to the final product, many of which need to be in place before the first shovel hits the dirt.

Before We Even Touch The Ground

The Colman project gave us a great opportunity to utilize our process for creating a beautiful landscape project. Step number one is always a consultation. This is where we ask what your goals are, how you plan to use the space, how much work you are willing to do to maintain the landscape, etc.

After we get an idea of your goals we will want to come for a home visit. We get to start to visualize the space in a more concrete way. Home visits are where some of the best magic happens—we get to add our expertise to your ideas by asking fun questions. Do you want a pool? How about a waterfall? Or could we give you a gas firepit? Should we install solar lighting above your outdoor dining area? The home visit is where your ideas and our expertise start to fuse into one incredible plan to make an incredible yard.

In our home visit for the Colman property, we found that we had our work cut out for us, which is our favorite type of project. We walked around the property and saw that the space had great potential, plenty of space, a unique blueprint, and great views gave us a lot to work with when starting the planning stages.

After we’ve measured your space and conducted a property audit, we will start to create a detailed plan for you to approve. This process takes time and the collaboration of several members of our team. We start with brainstorming while we have images and plans available for us to reference. We look at the total square footage, the existing terrain, considering the surrounding trees/shade, existing systems (sprinklers, gas lines, electrical access), and more to plan your yard.

With the Colman project, we got to really flex our design and planning skills. These clients wanted a multi-functional space they could use year-round to entertain and enjoy the outdoors. We incorporated a natural water feature that spilled into a stunning waterfall, a fireplace with comfortable outdoor seating, a huge porch for year-round outdoor dining and entertaining. With all these components we had to consider each individually as well as how they would work together in the space. Considering where to lay the sprinkler system, how to add the fireplace, what materials to use for the deck, and how to enhance the existing beauty of the space were all critical decisions we had to make months in advance. By making a plan that considered all the features in the space, we avoided costly mistakes and potentially having to re-do aspects of the yard—if we hadn’t decided where to lay sprinklers before we laid sod or installed pavers, we would have potentially had to rip up our work to lay down the sprinkler pipe. That’s not only a waste of time and money but a huge headache for the homeowner. Thankfully with this project our team utilized their collective decades of experience to avoid those types of avoidable mistakes.

Another favorite feature we added were the water features. We created a stream to add ambiance to the space and created a more natural feel to the landscape.
